FROM THE NEW NEWS FILE:
Ninety two percent of managers told researchers that they are doing an “excellent” or “good” job managing their employees, BUT only 67% of workers agree with them. In addition 23% say their boss is doing a “fair” job and 10% say they are doing “poor’ job.
What explains this discrepancy? Research conducted by Rasmussen Reports LLC for Hudson, a staffing and outsourcing firm, suggests that while workers aren’t giving managers an overwhelming thumbs-down, the difference does suggest a problem.
Basically, no one thinks they are doing a bad job, but most workers
get feedback through their yearly evaluation. Unless companies are conducting 360-degree evaluations of their managers, they may be asking for trouble in the form of low morals, productivity and effectiveness. A 360-degree evaluation includes a manager’s boss, employees and colleagues in the evaluation process. Often vendors and customers are also included. According to the Rasmussen research about one third of the managers who have 360 degree evaluations are unhappily surprised at the result. Another third have a good handle on how well they are doing and in what areas. Another third will be happily surprised to hear that others think they are doing a better job than they themselves think!
Only 26% of workers surveyed said their company lets them evaluate higher-ups. Also 26% of managers say they have not been given enough training to handle their management and supervision responsibilities. Considering that 92% of them think they are going either an “excellent” or “good” job–that is a very high percentage indeed!
I’d love to hear your comments and have you tell me how your manager is doing (using the words excellent, good, fair, and poor) and how you believe you are doing as a manager, supervisor or lead.
